Comes with microscope and stand, as pictured, plus a CD with the software downloaded from Intel.

Also three pics (1 each at 10X, 60X and 200X) of a memory chip I had lying around. Notes on the pictures (these are pictures I took myself with the included software): the reverse of a Lincoln penny, showing the Lincoln Memorial (10X) a close-up view of the outline of the statue of Lincoln (60X) and an EXTREME close-up at 200X. These and the ones captured via IrfanView were 352 x 288 pixels. I was also able to capture pics via the GIMP program on a Linux machine.

However, the microscope also functions as a standard TWAIN device - I was able to grab pictures with a Windows picture-viewing program I like called IrfanView (), and that program also lets you control the lamps, so you can capture photos of both opaque and transparent/translucent objects without squishing your icons. It will switch back to whatever you had it set to before, but if, like me, you have lots and lots of icons on your desktop, they will be squished into the top 600 pixels of the screen.

A note about the software: I downloaded the software for Windows 2000 and Windows XP (but NOT Vista or 7) from Intel and will send a CD along with the microscope, but it has its downside - it will switch your screen resolution to 800 X 600 while it is running. All the ones I saved were 512 x 384 pixels. The software can vary the brightness of the illumination and lets you capture snapshots or record video of what you're looking at in the microscope, take time-lapse movies and comes with image manipulation, drawing and painting tools, special effects and sounds.

T are two lights to illuminate your subject - one above the stage for opaque objects and one below for slides and transparent or translucent objects. This is approximate, depending on the size of your monitor.

I particularly like the in-depth guide to the use of the QX3 microscope on the "Science, Optics & You" pages at (opens in new window): w they show all the parts, show how to use it, with lots of suggestions and even take it apart and modify it if you want to! An excellent resource! A company called Digital Blue sells a kit of Computer Microscope Science Tools for $5.00 that includes 2 speciment jars, 2 Petri dishes, 1 sample slide, a pair of plastic tweezers, an eye dropper and a clip to hold slides (very useful) at (opens in new window): /ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=CS-QX3-TK They also have PDF files of a Parents' Set-up Guide (439KB) and a Suggested Activities Guide (1.16MB) at (right-click and select "Save Link As" to download these files): /customer-service/guides/qsg/QX3_Microscope_Parent_Guide.pdf and /customer-service/guides/qsg/QX3_Microscope_Activity_Guide.pdf The microscope connects to a computer via the pictured USB cable and has magnifications of 10X, 60 X and 200X. (Remember, it's almost back-to-school time!) This is a great educational toy - I have been having fun with it myself! Since these were popular for schools, t is a lot of educational support to be found online. Intel Play QX3 USB Microscope - Works!
